Rainforest Fungi

I know, I know....but seriously fungi is so cool, why wouldn't I want to post more? Here are some of my latest finds.

Fungi are fantastic recycler's. They break down dead plant material and free up the nutrients, making them available to other living organisms in the forest. They are responsible for the release of 85% of the carbon within a forest, while bacteria and animals break down the remaining 15%.  Without the fungi’s excellent recycling service those nutrients would be locked up in ever increasing piles of natural rubbish, soil fertility would steadily decline, and plant growth would be restricted.

Rainforest Fungus

This beautiful unidentified yellow fungus popped up the other day and the end our driveway. We have just moved house and our new backyard is proving to be a fungus haven (much to my delight) so there should be many more new fungi pics to come.

Garden Fungi

If you are a regular viewer of my blog, you will already know that I have a thing about fungi. Here's a new addition to my collection of pics, these sprang up in my back yard over the last few days as the weather here gets wetter and more humid.

White Top

Yesterday it rained and rained all day...and I didn't get chance to go out and take any photos. But I was rewarded this morning when I went for a walk around the garden and this beautiful specimen had popped up overnight! Cool hey?

Bracket Fungi

One of my favourite subjects! I do love a good bit of fungi and luckily for me the rainforest produces some great variations. This one has some great rich browns and reds in it. Awesome.

Scarlet Tops

Just when you thought it was safe....more fungi!!!! These dainty little specimens appeared in our garden after a week or so of rain. Hard to tell from the photo but they were only about 5cm high.

Fungi - Part 2

See! told you I liked fungi. The top pic was taken here in Queensland and the one at the bottom is from New Zealand.

Fungi

Now, some people might wonder why? Well, I can't really explain, maybe it's the shapes, the colours or the unusual places that they pop up. But the fact is; I do have a thing for fungus. It fascinates me and every opportunity I get to snap some, I do.
