Beach Sunrise

I'm always in my happy place when walking on the beach. The best time of day has to be sunrise; particularly when it looks this good.

Beach Art

Ask anyone who knows me well and they'll tell you that I love beach-combing. I love the feeling that I get when I step onto a beach, total relaxation and calm. I love wandering for hours looking for shells, bits of driftwood, seeds, stones...anything interesting I can find.

I also love coming across some of the natural art that the ocean and the beach create. Below are some of my favourites.

River Mouth

This tranquil view is the halfway point on my morning walk. The smoke in the distance is from the local sugar crushing mill which is going full pelt at this time of year as they harvest the sugar cane. Its a real struggle to get out of bed in the morning.

Beach Moods

Its been a while since I've posted. Not sure why. Just wasn't feeling inspired I guess. Well, that all changed this morning when I went for a walk on the beach. Usually we are blessed with clear blue, cloudless skies, and don't get me wrong, that makes us lucky. But it's a little boring isn't it? Well, this morning was a little different as you can see and it really made me stop and look. Beautiful.

Arse Rock

I was quite taken with this rock formation when we came across it at Finch Bay in Cooktown. We had this great walk through the bush from the Botanical Gardens (which unfortunately were very disappointing)  and we ended up at this secluded bay with white sand and turquoise waters.  When I turned around to look at where we had come from, there were these rocks. Now I don't know about you, but I only see one thing! Fabulous.

Coral Coast

When we think of tropical coastlines, we tend to think of white sands, palm trees and still turquoise oceans.  This photo of the Coral Coast was taken during the "Wet Season" in the Tropics and depicts quite a different picture. I love the beach when it's stormy and the tropical coast in the Summer does stormy really well!

Cyclone Sky

I spotted this amazing cloud formation was just off the beach during our Wet Season last year. It was the first signs of Tropical Cyclone Olga which was threatening to hit land not far from our house! A scary, yet strangely exciting time as we moved all loose objects into the house, strapped down things that couldn't be moved...and waited. In the end it never eventuated. But due to where we live the prospect of  more is pretty likely.

Tracks in the Sand

I'm sometimes blown away by some of the beautiful "living art" nature creates for us. These tracks in the beach made by the incoming tide are so cool!

Crab Sand

I come across this quite a lot while I'm walking on the beach. Little holes surrounded by little globules of sand and it looks really cool. The little creature responsible for causing these pretty patterns is a Sand Bubbler (it even has a cool name!). It's a tiny crab who burrows in the sand and these little balls are a result of it's burrowing and feeding activities.

Beach Shacks

This shot is taken in a place that will always be special to me. I spent my childhood holidays here and have lots of great memories. This beach is in Southwold on the East coast of the UK,  it truly is a beautiful part of the world. These beach shacks line the shore and are all painted in bright colours...quintessential British seaside!

Ripples

I've always loved beaches. The sand, the waves, the smells, the rockpools, the seaweed and most of all exploring for hours on end for shells. I just feel at peace on a beach. I don't remember where I took this photo, but it sums up for me the "Essence of" a beach.

Stromatolites

Hamelin Pool is one of only two places in the world where living marine Stomatolites or "living fossils" can be found. This alone made this photo worthwhile. Hamelin Pool is located in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area in WA, Australia.

Hermit Crab

I found this cool Hermit Crab while I was walking along a beach on Stewart Island, NZ.

Cape Tribulation

These photos were taken on the beautiful Cape Tribulation in Queensland. This area is breathtaking and the beach backs onto the oldest rainforest in the world..quite spectacular!

Seaweed

I have a thing about seaweed...don't ask me why, but I just love taking pics of it. Here's a couple of examples. Both taken in NZ, one on the Otago Penninsula, the other on Stewart Island.

Jacksons Bay

This is the stunning Jacksons Bay which is located on the West Coast of New Zealands south island, close to Haast.
